Sunshine in the Vines at Aravina Estate!

It has been a very exciting month here at Aravina Estate both in the vines and with our wines scooping up a host of awards.

Grapevine news! - Aravina Estate

Grapevine news!

Whilst picking is on hold for a day or so with some wet weather in the region, Chief Winemaker Ryan Aggiss takes the time to offer a rundown on how things are looking in the vines as vintage continues.

"It’s been another busy and successful week for Aravina as we continue to work deep into V17. It hasn’t been without its challenges or sleep deprivation, but the grapes and wines are looking as good as I’ve seen from the Estate.

Grape yields are around 25% higher for the whites then previous years, which is great news!

In the vines 80 tonne of whites have now been processed, which equates to ~ %35 of our total harvest yield expectations. We still have a little more Chenin to hand pick and then it's time for the reds...

Additionally the winery is full tilt at the moment...

    • The first pick of the Chardonnay is already through ferment, this was picked from the middle of both the East and West blocks. This will now be topped out, locked up in its oak and stirred weekly to build complexity.
    • The second handpicked Chardonnay is starting to ferment now and is looking great.
    • Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon are in tank and ready for the next phase of their lives, fermentation. I will be putting a portion of these wines to large format oak puncheons (500lts)  to add complexity and class to the base wine.
    • We will process the handpicked Chenin on Saturday, and that will go straight to barrel."

Vintage and the Vines | Aravina Estate

Vintage and the Vines

At this time of year in the Margaret River region there is a hive of activity in the vineyard. Aravina's Chief Winemaker Ryan Aggiss is expecting a bumper harvest and some outstanding wines to come from it:

"Vintage is nearly underway with Chardonnay scheduled for picking in the first week of March. Quality is excellent and the recent run of warm weather has resulted in rapid accumulation of sugar and flavours. We were fortunate enough to missed by the extreme weather events of early February that decimated the Swan Valley and associated grape production areas. Aravina Estate sends our thoughts and best wishes to those growers and wineries affected by those recent events. Its likely Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc will be picked within the next two weeks, with our Rose base also in line for picking in the near future.
Red grape varieties are tracking along fantastically, with flavours and grape health at levels we come to expect from this amazing estate. It will be a busy 6-8 weeks for the estate with all varietals looking to be ripe in quick succession meaning little rest for viticultural or winemaking staff.
Lets hope for a run of warm weather, no rain and slight winds to ensure this will be another amazing season for Aravina Estate."

More gold for the Aravina Estate 2014 Wildwood Ridge Reserve Chardonnay - Aravina Estate

More gold for the Aravina Estate 2014 Wildwood Ridge Reserve Chardonnay

Aravina Estate’s flagship white wine, the 2014 Wildwood Ridge Reserve Chardonnay has added to its haul of gold medals with yet another one in the Qantas Mt Barker Wine Show 2015 – Class 10, 2014 Dry White Chardonnay.

The Aravina Estate Chardonnay has now won three gold and one silver medal to date. It has already won gold at this year’s Boutique Wine Awards, Perth Royal Wine Show and silver at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show, and now gold at the Qantas, Mt Barker show affirming its status as one of the region’s leading Chardonnays. The 2013 vintage collected five trophies at Perth Royal Wine Show in 2014.

Winemaker Jodie Opie said, “the consistent temperate climate that influences the Yallingup vineyard provides a fruit richness which, when combined with wild ferments and time on lees, produces a lively and consistently good expression of Margaret River Chardonnay.”

The Wildwood Ridge Reserve Chardonnay is 100% Estate grown. The fruit was hand-picked in the early hours of the morning from the low yielding (3.7 t/Ha) Block 3 vineyard and transported directly to the winery.

The bunches were chilled for 24 hours prior to being whole bunch pressed. Post settling, the juice was transferred to barriques with a portion of grape solids.

Natural fermentation was used on 100% of the French oak barrels. The wine was left to mature on lees to add complexity and texture. The wine spent nine months in oak barriques and puncheons – 60% new with the balance in one-year-old French oak. The wine was blended, lightly fined and filtered prior to bottling.

The wine is currently released and has an RRP of $45.00. It is available through cellar door and the distributors below.

Aravina Estate Wins Gold at Perth Royal Wine Show 2015 - Margaret river winery

Aravina Estate Wins Gold at Perth Royal Wine Show 2015

Aravina Estate is delighted to announce that the 2014 Wildwood Ridge Reserve Chardonnay has been awarded the Top GOLD Medal in Class 6 at the Perth Royal Wine Show 2015.

This is a tremendous follow up result to the Gold medal that was awarded at the 2015 Boutique Wine Show in August and the outstanding effort of the 2013 vintage that won five trophies at Perth Royal Wine Show in 2014.

Winemaker, Jodie Opie said “it further reiterates that the old vineyard planted in 1986 is capable of producing very high quality fruit and whilst Gold medals can be attributed to modern winemaking, the reality is that it must start in the vineyard.”

Marketing and Sales Manager, Blair Hill said that “It is yet another great result for this style of Chardonnay that Aravina is consistently producing. In discussion with the judges, it was not surprising to hear that the Aravina Chardonnay was an extremely close second to the trophy winning wine for Best Chardonnay of Show.”

In addition, the 2014 Semillon and 2013 Merlot both received Silver medals in their respective Class.

The Gold medal result is a wonderful follow up to the five trophies the previous vintage was awarded at the 2014 Perth Royal Wine Show.

The Marketing and Sales Manager, Blair Hill said “it is another super performance from a wine that we know has consistency, power and finesse. The consumer is coming back to Chardonnay as a variety due to the balance and elegance of this style of wine. The Aravina Wildwood Ridge Reserve Chardonnay showcases the best that the northern end of Margaret River has to offer from mature vines.”

2010 Sparkling Pinot Chardonnay Released - Aravina Wine

    2007 Sparkling Pinot Chardonnay Released

After the success of our 2008 Sparkling, we are extremely pleased with our 2010 Vintage. With only half the residual sugar than the 2008, it's an off-dry style that has balance and a great depth of flavour.

The fruit for the 2010 Sparkling Pinot Chardonnay was sourced from the Margaret River wine region. The bunches were carefully hand harvested and the individual fruit parcels were whole-bunch pressed.

The individual free run juices were fermented on light solids. Post fermentation and clarification of the resultant base wines were blended to formulate the final blend prior to liqueur de tirage (yeast and sugar addition) for the secondary fermentation in bottle using the traditional method.

The wine spent five years ‘on lees’ before being riddled, disgorged and liqueur d’expedition (sugar addition) prior to closure under cork.

    Wine notes

    • Variety: 83% Pinot Noir and 17% Chardonnay.
    • Alcohol: 12.2% v/v  pH: 3.18  Total Acidity: 8.0  Residual Sugar: 14.1g/L
    • Colour: Pale to medium lemon with a fine bead.
    • Nose: The nose shows citrus and green apple aromas with yeasty and nutty characters derived from ageing on lees.
    • Palate: An off-dry palate which combines delicate citrus and red fruits with autolytic complexity, fine mousse and creamy lees characters supported by a fresh acid structure. An elegant sparkling wine with a lingering finish.
    • Cellaring: Enjoy now or cellar for up to five years.
